Kvinneaktivistene (lit. 'Women Activists') is a Norwegian gender-critical/trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) group that opposes transgender rights. It is closely associated with the Norwegian chapter of Women's Declaration International (WDI), and has been accused of being transphobic and had a presentation cancelled by an Oslo events venue for this reason.[1] It is considered part of the broader anti-gender movement in Norway.
It is a breakaway group from the Women's Group Ottar, itself with roots in the Women's Front. The Women's Front had roots in the Maoist Workers' Communist Party. Historically, the name Kvinneaktivistene was used for a 1991 breakaway group from the Women's Front, that then became the Bergen chapter of the Women's Group Ottar. Named after the historical group, a new breakaway group from Ottar was formed by a group of women over their more hardline anti-trans stance, after Ottar had refused to campaign actively against gender self-identification.[2]
It is closely associated with the Norwegian branch of Women's Declaration International (WDI), with many of the same members and issues. For example, Kvinneaktivistene member and former WDI Norway chair Benedicte Alnæs, has written that trans women are "men" and "pervos."[3] On behalf of Kvinneaktivistene, Benedicte Alnæs, Tina Skotnes and Cathrine Ude wrote an article in Klassekampen that complained that anti-trans activists have faced disciplinary action from their employers.[4] Skotnes and Ude have also signed the WDI anti-trans manifesto.[5] According to the letter, Kvinneaktivistene exclusively consists of women who have faced what they described as a "witch-hunt" over their views, including disciplinary action from employers and public criticism.[4]
In 2023 cultural events venue Kulturhuset cancelled a planned event that Kvinneaktivistene had rented the venue for, with the rationale that Kvinneaktivistene has transphobic bylaws.[1][6][7] § 1 in Kvinneaktivistene's bylaws explicitly excludes trans women, stating that "by women we mean women."[8] The event promoted the detransition narrative, that has been noted as being weaponized by anti-trans groups.[9] Kvinneaktivistene has stated that "we are women, not transphobic."[10] On Twitter the group has promoted content from anonymous anti-trans accounts (e.g. "Sappfo") that have been analyzed as key actors in the Norwegian anti-gender movement and been described as part of a "complex threat to democracy."[11] Referring to some of the women active in WDI and Kvinneaktivistene, the leader of the Women's Front called them "transphobes, racists and sexists" and said that "we strongly condemn them."[2]
