Matthew E. Ammon is an American governmental official who serves as director of the Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.[1] He was acting United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the second Trump administration from January 20, 2025 to February 5, 2025, having previously served in the same role for the Biden administration from January to March 2021.[2] Ammon served an interim capacity until Biden's nominee, Marcia Fudge, was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 10, 2021.[3]
Career
[edit]Ammon joined the Department of Housing and Urban Development around 1996. He was previously general deputy assistant secretary of policy development and research. He also served as acting general deputy assistant secretary for Community Planning and Development.[4][5]
Acting HUD Secretary
[edit]After President Biden signed a presidential memorandum in January 2021 titled "Redressing Our Nation’s and the Federal Government’s History of Discriminatory Housing Practices and Policies",[6] Ammon described it as "a vital step" and "meaningful action [towards advancing] racial equity in housing and [expanding] opportunity for all".[7][8] Under Ammon's leadership, HUD also promised to investigate and prohibit instances of anti-LGBTQ housing discrimination (under the Fair Housing Act)[9] and awarded $2.5 billion of federal funds to renew support for thousands of homeless assistance programs across the United States.[10][11]
