James McBride is a distinguished global hotelier with a career spanning over thirty-five years in the hospitality industry. Throughout his career, McBride has been recognized for his innovative approach to hotel management, creativity, and the development of exceptional hotel experiences.[1] His contributions to the field have earned him notable accolades, including being named “One to Watch” by Bloomberg Businessweek’s Bloomberg 50 and receiving the Independent Hotelier of the World award by Hotels magazine.[2][3]

McBride's journey in the hospitality industry began with a foundational 14-year tenure at The Ritz Carlton Hotel Company. He started as a management trainee in Boston and ascended to the role of General Manager, serving in various locations around the world. In 2002, McBride's expertise led him to be appointed as the General Manager of The Grosvenor House on London’s Park Lane, one of the most prestigious properties globally. The following year, he further solidified his reputation by joining Rosewood Hotels as the Managing Director of The Carlyle in New York, in addition to overseeing all Rosewood Caribbean Resorts as Regional Director.[4]

After achieving significant success with Rosewood Hotels, McBride took on the role of President at YTL Hotels, headquartered in Singapore, from 2009 to 2012. Under his leadership, the company experienced substantial growth, further demonstrating his ability to enhance hotel operations and guest experiences.[5]

In 2012, McBride embarked on a new chapter in his career, venturing into hotel entrepreneurship. He partnered with Christopher Burch, a renowned brand builder and long-time friend, to acquire Nihiwatu, a sought-after surf destination in Indonesia. Under their stewardship, Nihiwatu was transformed into NIHI Sumba, an iconic brand that has garnered international acclaim. Under McBride's guidance, NIHI Sumba has been awarded the Best Hotel in the World by Travel & Leisure for two consecutive years. Furthermore, he is actively involved in the expansion of the NIHI brand, with plans to open new properties in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, and Rote Island, Indonesia, aligning with NIHI’s vision of the Edge Of Wildness™.[6][7]

James McBride's educational background includes studies in Hospitality and Tourism at the University of Johannesburg and completion of the Harvard Business School PMD program. A native of South Africa, McBride now resides between Bali and Lisbon, continuing to influence the hospitality industry through his visionary leadership and commitment to excellence.[8][9]
