Sanjiv Sen

Sanjiv Sen (Hindi: संजीव सेन; born 21st December 1967) is a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India.^[1][2] In February 2014, he was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.^{[3] [4]}

Sanjiv has appeared in several legal cases related to Constitutional, Civil, Company and Corporate law, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, PILs, etc. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Hons.) in 1989 from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata, the University of Calcutta, and later went on to study law at the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, College of Delhi.^[5][6]

Family Background[edit]

Sanjiv was born on 21 December 1967 in Kolkata. His grandfather Sukumar Sen (civil servant) was the first Chief Election Commissioner of India.

His granduncle Ashoke Kumar Sen was a former Union Law Minister of India. He was also a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) for more than 40 years.

His granduncle Justice Alok C. Gupta, was a former Judge of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

Career[edit]

Sanjiv Sen enrolled with the Bar Council of India in 1992 after completing his law degree in the same year. During the initial years of his career, Sen worked on several high-profile cases with his granduncle Ashoke Kumar Sen.

In 1995, he was appointed as one of the junior counsels for J.B. Dadachanji and Co. where he was engaged with a variety of national as well as international clients including Tata Steel, Hindustan Unilever (Indian Associate of Unilever), PepsiCo, ITC Limited, Coca-Cola, Rolls-Royce, etc.

In 1998, Sanjiv was appointed to the Senior Arguing Panel of the Central Government led by the erstwhile Attorney General Soli Sorabjee with whom he worked closely on several landmark cases and represented various Central Government Departments and Ministries in the Supreme Court of India.^[7]

In 2003, Sanjiv Sen was appointed the first-ever Standing Counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.^[8][9]

Sanjiv represented the Delhi Municipal Corporation in several important cases in the Supreme Board which were widely reported such as the Delhi Pollution case^[10], Ghazipur abattoir case^[11], Delhi property sealing case^[12], Uphaar cinema fire case^[13], Delhi Park Cases^[14], etc.
