Overview[edit | edit source]

Coronavirus, named due to the "crown" like the appearance of its surface projections, was first isolated from chickens in 1937. The etiological agent, a novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), named for the similarity of its symptoms to those induced by the severe acute respiratory syndrome, causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is a virus identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. On March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic.

Statement of Need[edit | edit source]

As the Covid-19 pandemic has spread all over the globe, there have been growing reports and studies demonstrating its catastrophic effects on different organ systems. As medical professionals encountering a large number of cases on a daily basis, we feel the necessity of gathering all the information in a database where we can refer to while managing patients affected by COVID-19.

How Can WikiDoc Meet These Unmet Needs[edit | edit source]

COVID-19 project is established to achieve the following goals:

  • Gather all the evidence-based information regarding COVID-19 in one database to be used as an educational source for medical professionals.
  • Provide information on how COVID-19 affects the physiology of different organ systems to optimize patient care.
  • Provide information on different clinical manifestations of COVID-19 as well as possible evidence-based approaches for the management of those conditions.
  • Provide information on the latest clinical trials investigating strategies to treat or prevent COVID-19.
