Infertility history and symptoms

Overview[edit | edit source]

Infertility may present with many symptoms, depending on the cause of infertility such as oligomenorrhea, hirsutism, etc. In some cases women might not have any symptoms/complaints other than the inability to conceive.

History and Symptoms[edit | edit source]

• The main symptom of infertility is the inability to become pregnant. Specific symptoms depend on what is causing the infertility.^[1][2]
• Some women may have a history of oligomenorrhea, polymenorrhea or amenorrhea.
• Women who are infertile as a result of PCOS may have symptoms of dysmenorrhea, irregular periods, acne, hirsutism, weight gain etc.
• Infertility can cause many painful emotions in one or both partners.

Specific questions which can be asked in history[edit | edit source]

• History of abdominal or pelvic surgery
• History of contraceptive use
• History of exposure to diethylstilbestrol
• History of sexually transmitted infections in either partner
