The 15th West Bengal Legislative Assembly was constituted following the 2011 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election held from 18 April to 10 May 2011 in six phases. The election marked the end of the Left Front’s 34-year rule in the state and brought the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) to power under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee[1].
The AITC won 184 seats in the 294-member assembly, securing a clear majority on its own[2]. The party had contested the election in alliance with the Indian National Congress, which won 42 seats[2].
The ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) suffered a significant defeat, winning only 40 seats—a decline of 136 seats compared to the 2006 election[1]. Other members of the Left Front, such as the All India Forward Bloc and Revolutionary Socialist Party, also saw major setbacks. The overall voter turnout was 84.33%, one of the highest ever recorded in the state[1].

The 2011 assembly election was held in six phases between 18 April and 10 May 2011[1]. The results were declared on 13 May 2011. The AITC, in alliance with the Congress, ended the world's longest-serving democratically elected communist government[1].
