From Wikipedia - Reading time: 5 min

Strand Theatre a theatre located at 116 S. Main Street in Atmore, Alabama.[1] It had been operating since around 1924 before it was closed in November 2013. Though it is not being used in the traditional way a theatre is usually ran, it is still being used as a private showing theatre and a concert hall. With the Encore attached next door, it is also an event space, like Bingo and the Atmore Mardi Gras Ball. There is a music studio upstairs for aspiring artist. This space also provides art classes to Rachel Patterson Elementary due to school funding cuts. It is still a vibrant part of the Atmore Community. [2]

Reconstruction

[edit]

In the theater's late days, a lot of reconstruction was needed. A community group named Pride of Atmore came together to restore the old building. The theater underwent a complete interior and exterior renovation that added a new lobby, marquee, and theater area.[1]

The building next door was home to a hardware store that stood for 122 years, and it was restored along with the theater. The Atmore Hardware building was renovated into a space for live music, rentals and community events. The cost of restoring both buildings came to over $5.2 million. The Pride of Atmore group used donations and grants from foundations and local businesses.[1]
