Azerbaijan Rugby Federation The Azerbaijan Rugby Federation (ARF) is the governing body responsible for the promotion, development, and administration of rugby union in Azerbaijan. Established in the early 2000s, the federation oversees all levels of rugby activity in the country, from grassroots participation to the national teams.

History Rugby was introduced to Azerbaijan during the Soviet era, but the sport remained relatively underdeveloped until the nation gained independence in 1991. The Azerbaijan Rugby Federation was officially founded in 2004 with the aim of revitalizing the sport and establishing a national governing structure.

In the same year, the ARF became a full member of Rugby Europe (formerly FIRA-AER), and later sought recognition from World Rugby, the international governing body for rugby union.

Structure and Objectives The ARF's main objectives include:

Promoting rugby union across Azerbaijan, particularly among youth and schools.

Organizing domestic competitions and training programs.

Supporting the development of coaches, referees, and officials.

Managing the national men’s and women’s rugby teams.

National Teams The Azerbaijan national rugby union team, nicknamed the “Caspian Warriors,” has participated in various regional and international competitions, primarily under the Rugby Europe banner. Although the team is not yet a major force on the international stage, it has steadily developed through training camps and international fixtures.

There are also initiatives underway to develop a women’s national team and strengthen youth representation in the sport.

Domestic Competitions The ARF organizes several domestic tournaments, including the national championship and various sevens rugby events. Rugby is played at club and university levels, with teams based in major cities such as Baku, Ganja, and Sumgait.

Development Efforts With the support of Rugby Europe and international rugby development programs, the ARF continues to work on expanding the sport’s reach. Partnerships with schools and universities have been instrumental in growing the player base. Coaching and referee courses are held regularly to raise the standard of rugby across the country.

Challenges Rugby in Azerbaijan still faces challenges such as limited infrastructure, low public awareness, and competition from more popular sports like football and wrestling. However, dedicated efforts by the ARF and international support have helped lay the groundwork for future growth. Written by Murad Khalilzade
