Brunei and Iran established diplomatic relations on 1 May 1990.[1] Relations have been generally strong and have been similar to Iran's relations with Indonesia. Both countries are members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.

History[edit]

Brunei supports Iran's nuclear program.[2]

In 2023, the diplomatic heads engaged in substantial dialogue, shedding light on crucial matters related to the bilateral relations between Iran and Brunei. They discussed potential areas of partnership and cooperation, further echoing the intention to maintain and increase their countries’ mutual interests.[2]

Amir-Abdollahian was particularly keen on elaborating Iran's standing in the field of emerging technologies and knowledge. He expressed his contentment towards the progress made in the cooperation between Iran and Brunei in this specific sector, an area poised to drive economic growth and technological advancements for both nations.[2]

In response, Yusof expressed his gratitude to Amir-Abdollahian for the invitation to Tehran, affirming his country's intent to foster stronger relations with Iran. He emphasized Brunei's commitment to developing cooperation with Iran, signaling a shared objective to explore new avenues of collaboration.[2]

Both countries support the Palestinian cause.

Brunei has consistently voted against condemning Iran at the United Nations.[3][4][5][6][7][8]

Diplomatic missions[edit]

Iran maintains an embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei maintains an embassy in Tehran.
