Cassel is a census-designated place (CDP) in Shasta County, California.[2] Cassel sits at an elevation of 3,176 feet (968 m).[2] Its population is 207 as of the 2020 census, remaining the same from the 2010 census. The ZIP Code is 96016. The community is inside area code 530.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP covers an area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2), 96.44% of it land and 3.56% of it water.
This region experiences hot and dry summers, with highs over 90 °F (32 °C) in July and August. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Cassel has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on climate maps.[3]

The 2020 United States census reported that Cassel had a population of 207. The population density was 102.2 inhabitants per square mile (39.5/km2). The racial makeup of Cassel was 181 (87.4%) White, 0 (0.0%) African American, 1 (0.5%) Native American, 2 (1.0%) Asian, 2 (1.0%) Pacific Islander, 6 (2.9%) from other races, and 15 (7.2%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14 persons (6.8%).[21]
The whole population lived in households. There were 100 households, out of which 11 (11.0%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 56 (56.0%) were married-couple households, 7 (7.0%) were cohabiting couple households, 18 (18.0%) had a female householder with no partner present, and 19 (19.0%) had a male householder with no partner present. 29 households (29.0%) were one person, and 22 (22.0%) were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.07.[21] There were 66 families (66.0% of all households).[22]
The age distribution was 27 people (13.0%) under the age of 18, 12 people (5.8%) aged 18 to 24, 32 people (15.5%) aged 25 to 44, 59 people (28.5%) aged 45 to 64, and 77 people (37.2%) who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 57.9 years. There were 118 males and 89 females.[21]
There were 146 housing units at an average density of 72.1 units per square mile (27.8 units/km2), of which 100 (68.5%) were occupied. Of these, 93 (93.0%) were owner-occupied, and 7 (7.0%) were occupied by renters.[21]
In the state legislature Cassel is in the 1st senatorial district, represented by Republican Megan Dahle,[23] and the 1st Assembly district, represented by Republican Heather Hadwick.[24] Federally, Cassel is in California's 1st congressional district, represented by Republican Doug LaMalfa.[25]
The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail passes East of Cassel.
Just north of the town is the site of Packway Materials who have repurposed broken construction equipment into sculpture.
