District council elections in England

From Wikipedia - Reading time: 2 min

Listing of elections to the non-metropolitan district and borough councils created by the 1972 Local Government Act. Borough and district councils are the second tier of local government in the parts of England which are covered by shire counties. County councils sit above borough and district councils in the hierarchy of government providing services such as education, libraries and areas of strategic planning. Borough and district council responsibilities include waste management, the consideration of planning applications and the provision of certain leisure services e.g. swimming pools and fitness centres. Since the mid 1990s, following on from the abolition of the metropolitan county councils in 1986, there has been a trend towards combining both tiers of local government in single level unitary authorities.
