Hispanos are a group of Hispanic Americans who live in the Southwestern United States, which was formerly a province of New Spain then a province of Mexico. They are mostly descendants of Spanish settlers (with Basques), Mexicans who arrived during the Mexican colonial period, and Mestizos of mixed Spanish and Native American ancestry. Many Hispanos differentiate themselves culturally from Mexican Americans whose ancestors arrived in the Southwest after the Mexican Revolution. The term "Hispanos" is also sometimes used to refer to the Spanish settlers and their descendents in Louisiana and Florida.
