- Metro Pictures made a merger that created Metro-Goldwyn, later Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).
- MGM proceeded to get back into theatrical distribution in 1981 with its purchase of United Artists. Following his brief ownership of the company in 1986, Ted Turner formed Turner Entertainment Co. as a holding company for the pre-1924 Metro Pictures (silent films)/pre-May 1986 MGM ('talkies' films and television) libraries which he retained. After Turner's holdings were purchased by Time Warner in 1996, the film and television library was integrated into the Warner Bros. library.
