Self-replicating machines in fiction

Self-replicating machines are often portrayed in works of science fiction – for instance as an alien threat, as out-of-control man-made technology such as grey goo, as life-like subjects of necroevolution and sometimes even positively as a potential tool or method of space exploration/colonization.
