Colors TV, stylized as Colors Viacom18, owned by JioStar is an Indian general entertainment pay television. Its programming consists of family dramas, comedies, fantasy shows, youth-oriented reality shows, shows on crime, and television films.[1]
It was launched on 21 July 2008 by Viacom18 under CEO Rajesh Kamat.[2] In April 2011, Raj Nayak was appointed CEO, replacing Rajesh Kamat, who left to join CA Media.[3]
Over the years, series like Sasural Simar Ka, Balika Vadhu, Uttaran, Bigg Boss, Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi and Naagin helped the channel surpass the decade-old market-leader StarPlus in weekly Gross Rating Points (GRPs).[4][5]
On 21 January 2010, Colors became available on Dish Network in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where it is called Aapka Colors (Your Colors) that gives English subtitles on every show and to avoid confusion with now-defunct Colours TV.[6][7] Amitabh Bachchan served as brand ambassador for the UK and USA launches.[8]
Colors launched in the United Kingdom and Ireland on Sky on 25 January 2010.[9][10] On 9 December 2009, INX Media confirmed that Colors had bought 9XM's Sky EPG slot on channel 829 and on 5 January 2010, Colors secured a deal to join the ViewAsia subscription package.[11][12] Initially the channel was available free-to-air and then subsequently was added to the ViewAsia package on 19 April 2010.[13] Colors was added to Virgin Media on 1 April 2011, as a part of the Asian Mela pack.[14] On 2 September 2013, Colors left the ViewAsia package and became free-to-air on satellite again, as well as moving to Virgin's basic package.[15] On 18 August 2017, this decision was later reversed, and Colors left Freeview and became a pay channel again.[16][17][18][19]
Golden Petal Awards is an award function to honour personalities and reward them for contributing to Colors TV. It was also broadcast on the channel itself.[20][21]
Colors Rishtey is an Indian pay general entertainment television channel that mainly broadcasts re-runs of programming from Colors TV and also airs shows from NDTV Imagine and DD National. International feeds of Colors Rishtey also air dubbed shows and regional shows.
Programs of Pakistan channels have been aired, such as Humsafar.[22] Rishtey rebroadcasts series from many other channels as well.[23] The channel also creates original productions. Produced by BBC Media Action, Navrangi Re! is the channel's first original programming.[24]
In 2016, Network18 Group launched a Nickelodeon programming block named "Nick Hour India" on Colors Rishtey India.[25]
On 1 March 2019, the channel was rebranded as Colors Rishtey.[26]
