The Embassy of the United States in Algiers is the diplomatic mission of the United States of America in Algeria.
The U.S. Embassy in Algiers, Algeria was officially opened in 1962 after Algeria gained independence from France. Prior to Algeria's independence, a Consul General represented the United States in Algiers.[1]
Algeria first recognized the United States in 1795, but formal diplomatic relations were established in 1962 after Algeria gained independence from France.[2]
The embassy was then briefly closed when Algeria severed relations with the US on June 6, 1967, following the Six-Day War. During this period, U.S. interests in Algeria were managed by a U.S. Interests Section within the Swiss Embassy.[2]
Diplomatic relations between the United States and Algeria were reestablished in 1974. According to the State Department, the United States has maintained friendly relations with Algeria and seeks stronger economic and political ties. Algeria has been a strong partner in the fight against violent extremism.[1]
