The project was referred to as AK 63, before the announcement, as it is Ajith's 63rd film as the leading actor. The film was officially announced in March 2024, in addition to the official title. Principal photography commenced in May 2024 in Hyderabad. The film has music composed by Devi Sri Prasad, cinematography handled by Abinadhan Ramanujam and editing by Vijay Velukutty.
Good Bad Ugly is scheduled to release in January 2025, coinciding with the occasion of Pongal, in theatres.
While filming for Nerkonda Paarvai in early 2019, Adhik Ravichandran had met and narrated a script to Ajith Kumar, who agreed to act in the film but wanted to wait until the producers were finalised before making an announcement.[2] In the meantime, Ajith worked on Valimai (2022) and Thunivu (2023), while Adhik finished Bagheera and Mark Antony (both 2023).[3][4] In October 2023, Suresh Chandra, the actor's manager, confirmed that discussions were going on for Adhik to direct Ajith's 63rd film.[5] That November, he confirmed the project, tentatively titledAK63.[6] The project was funded by Naveen Yerneni and Y. Ravi Shankar's Mythri Movie Makers, marking their first Tamil venture. The company made a public announcement on 14 March 2024, with the official title Good Bad Ugly, a reference to the film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966).[7]
The film was made on a production budget of ₹270 crore (US$32 million), and Ajith was reported to receive ₹165 crore (US$20 million) as his remuneration.[1][8][9] Originally planned to be shot in the Tamil-language, Adhik stated that they are considering to also shoot significant portions of the film directly in Telugu as well.[10] The technical crew includes cinematographer Abinandhan Ramanujam, editor Vijay Velukutty, composer Devi Sri Prasad, costume designer Anu Vardhan, and stunt choreographers Supreme Sundar and Kaldian Vodenchardy.[11] Adhik co-wrote the film's script along with Ravi Kandasamy and Harish Manikandan.[12]
Ajith would sport two different looks for his character;[13] first one being a full dark shaded hairstyle and another being a white and dark one.[14]Trisha Krishnan was cast as the female lead, pairing opposite Ajith for the sixth time after Ji (2005), Kireedam (2007), Mankatha (2011), Yennai Arindhaal (2015) and Vidaamuyarchi.[15] On 28 June, Sunil announced his inclusion in the film; collaborating with Adhik for the second time after Mark Antony.[16]Rahul Dev confirmed his inclusion in September, having previously acted with Ajith in Vedalam (2015).[17] In early October, Prasanna announced his participation.[18] Later the same month, Arjun Das did the same.[19]Prabhu and Yogi Babu were present during the film's preliminary shooting, confirming their presence in the film.[20][21]
Principal photography was initially scheduled to begin in June 2024.[22] However, as the makers of Vidaamuyarchi, including Ajith, were scheduled to leave to United Arab Emirates to shoot there in late May,[23] the first schedule instead began on 9 May in Hyderabad.[24] A fight sequence, choreographed by Supreme Sundar, was reportedly firstly filmed.[25] The first schedule ended by 9 June.[26] Despite initial plans to go to South America for the second schedule,[27] by October, filming was taking place in Spain. During this schedule, photos and videos of Ajith were leaked to the social media platforms.[28]
Good Bad Ugly is scheduled to release theatrically in January 2025, coinciding with the occasion of Pongal.[31] Apart from the original Tamil language, it is also scheduled to release in the Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and Malayalam languages.[10]
