"Higher" is the fifth single from English singer-songwriter Taio Cruz's second studio album, Rokstarr. It was written and produced by Cruz and Sandy Vee, and was released on 26 November 2010. This song was originally written for Australian singer Kylie Minogue's album Aphrodite, but plans fell through.[1] However, Cruz and Minogue recorded a version of the song for the European release, while American rapper Travie McCoy recorded guest raps for the American release. The Brazilian and United Kingdom versions have parts of McCoy's rap mixed into the Minogue version. The version on Cruz's albums feature a solo vocal by Cruz with no guest vocalist and an edited version of the solo version was added to Radio Disney's playlist. In the United Kingdom, the United States version of the song made Radio 1's B-Playlist[2] while the single version (with Kylie Minogue) has made Radio 2's B-Playlist.[3]
4th & B'way Records released the single digitally in the United Kingdom on 7 February.[4] According to Jones, the release of "Higher" sparked renewed interest in its parent album, Rokstarr, leading to a revival for the album on charts worldwide in January 2011.[5]
In the UK, "Higher" peaked at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart on 12 February 2011, selling 37,437 copies during its fourth charting week.[6][7] Alan Jones of Music Week reported that "Higher" faced more simultaneous competing cover versions than any other song in chart history, including 29 soundalikes available online on Amazon and iTunes alone.[7] The single marked Cruz's seventh, McCoy's second, and Minogue's 34th top 10 entry in the region.[7] It became the seventieth-best-performing song of 2011,[8] and one of Minogue's best-selling singles in the UK.[9] The British Phonographic Industry certified the single gold in March 2022, denoting 400,000 units.[10] By May 2018, "Higher" had sold 338,000 copies in the United Kingdom.[9]
The single peaked at number 25 in Australia and number 5 in New Zealand.[11][12] In January 2011, it was certified gold by both the Australian Recording Industry Association and the Recorded Music NZ.[13][14] Across European countries, Minogue's version peaked in the top 20 on charts in Luxembourg (1), Norway (2),[15] Poland (2),[16] Austria (3),[17] Germany (3),[18] Hungary (4),[19] Scotland (6),[20] Finland (7),[21] France (7),[22] Ireland (7),[23] Spain (16),[24] Sweden (18),[25] and the Belgium regions of Wallonia (9)[26] and Flanders (12).[27] Minogue's version was certified gold in Sweden,[28] and platinum in Austria,[29] Germany,[30] and Switzerland.[31] In Netherlands, McCoy's version peaked in the top 20 in both the Dutch Top 40 (7),[32] and Dutch Single Top 100 (15).[33]
In North America, the single peaked in the top 15 in Mexico (10),[34] and Canada (13).[35] On 19 February 2011, McCoy's version of "Higher" peaked at number 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[36] The version also appeared on several airplay component charts, including Dance/Mix Show Airplay (6),[37]Latin Pop Airplay (40),[38]Pop Airplay (13),[39] and Rhythmic (24).[40] Remixes of "Higher" featuring both Minogue and McCoy were sent to US dance clubs, leading to all three artists sharing credit for the song on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart.[41] "Higher" climbed to number 3 on the chart on 5 March, the same week Minogue topped the chart with "Better than Today", making her the first act ever with two concurrent top-three hits on that chart.[41] Three weeks later, on 26 March, "Higher" hit number one for a week.[42] "I absolutely love knowing that there's such huge support for my songs in the US club scene," Minogue remarked.[41] By the end of 2011, The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single platinum, denoting a million units based on sales and streams.[43]
The European video, featuring Cruz and Minogue, was directed by Alex Herron[citation needed] and released 19 November 2010.[44] The United States version, featuring McCoy, was released the same day.[45] Both versions feature Cruz and either Minogue or McCoy in an underground warehouse with a live band.
