The Government of India's Ministry of Railways Indian Railway with UPSC has decided to recruit Group-A officers of Indian Railways through a separate examination called Indian Railway Management Service Examination (IRMSE) from 2023 onwards. In 2019, the cabinet approved the restructuring by merging existing 8 departments of Indian Railways into new services known as "Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS)".[1]
In 2019, based on the 'Bibek Debroy committee' report of 2015, the Cabinet of India approved the plan to merge eight railway services. In 2022, the government released a gazette notification about the merger of existing eight services, which fall under the Central Civil Services, into a new Indian Railways Management Service (IRMS).[2]
The eight merged services includes:
A candidate have to take either the Civil Services Examination or Engineering Services Examination for getting a seat in the IRMS. There is no other exam conducted separately for IRMS. Candidates from CSE can only take the Non Engineering posts of IRMS whereas candidates from ESE can only take the Engineering posts of IRMS. A candidate can appear on both exams and if the candidate qualify on both and wanted a seat in IRMS regardless of the background, the candidates has the freedom of choice of any of the either post.
