Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD), is a tertiary care teaching hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. It is the second largest state-run heart diseases hospital in Karachi.[1]
The 120-beds facility spread out over an area of 3.6 acres is located in Federal B. Area, Gulberg Town, Karachi.[2]
The institute provides out-patient service and diagnostic facilities, such as Electrocardiography, X-Ray, Exercise Tolerance Test, Echo Doppler studies, angiography, angioplasty. There are two coronary-care units, a 20-bed emergency hall and an 80-bed ward.[3]
In 1974, Nusrat Bhutto inaugurated a maternity home which later turned into an educational institution. The location housed the old campus of the Karachi Medical and Dental College.[2]
In January 2004, Mayor Karachi Naimatullah Khan laid the foundation stone of the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases.[4] The institute became functional in June 2005. The City District Government Karachi under Naimatullah Khan had spent about Rs.800 million on the project.[2]
In March 2008, the institute started providing a non-invasive cardiac therapy known as angiogenesis to patients to treat ischemic myocardium.[5]
In 2018, The Express Tribune reported regarding the various non-functional machines at the institute.[6]
In December 2021, the 22nd chest pain unit of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases was inaugurated at the institute.[7][8]
In May 2022, the angiography department of the institute was shut down due to the closure of the angiography machine.[9]
In August 2022, an Emergency Response Center of Rescue 1122 was inaugurated at the institute.[10]
In April 2023, a Research department was inaugurated at the institute.[11]
In May 2023, the angiography machine was activated at the institute.[12]
In April 2024, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation City Nursing Institute was inaugurated by the Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab at the KIHD.[13]
In May 2024, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab inaugurated the Blue Code Intensive Care Ward at the institute.[14]
Three angiography machines are not working at the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases, while only two are working. The solid state relay machine that help open the veins of the heart have been non-functional for two years and its CT angiography machine, which was bought at a cost of Rs120 million, has also been non-operational for two years. The staff required to operate these machines, including the doctor, are not present at the hospital. In addition to this, three echo machines and two ETT machines are also non-functional. An X-ray machine and 20 cardiac monitors are also out of order.
