Marat is a male and female given name. It is a common given name for males from the former Soviet republics. In Argentina it is usual a given name for females.[1]

Marat's language of origin is the Tatar language. Its meaning can be translated into desire (desired), wish. It derives from the Turkish name Murat, itself derived from the Arabic Murad. Another influence could be the French revolutioner Jean-Paul Marat.[2]
