Christopher Lethbridge (Independent) had won the seat at the 1937 by-election following the death of Richard Ball (Country).

William Foster (United Australia) died and Murray Robson had been elected as an Independent candidate at the resulting by-election however he re-joined the United Australia party.
The sitting member Sir Daniel Levy (United Australia) died in 1937. The resulting by-election was won by Harold Mason (Ind. United Australia) however he did not contest the election and the seat was regained by Vernon Treatt (United Australia).
