In the Pala domain a number of inscriptions from the Pala period mentioning communities of merchants have been found, some of which use the title sāhu (the earlier form of the word) for a merchant family.[3] The word originated from Sanskritsādhu, which, among many other meanings, refers to a merchant or trader.
