Teresa is a Mexican telenovela produced by José Alberto Castro for Televisa.[1] It is a remake of the Mexican telenovela of the same name produced in 1959.[2]
Angelique Boyer, Sebastian Rulli and Aarón Díaz starred as the main protagonists,[3][4] while Cynthia Klitbo and Ana Brenda Contreras starred as the co-protagonists.[5][6] Manuel Landeta, Margarita Magaña and Felicia Mercado played the main antagonists.
Teresa, a beautiful and intelligent woman, seeks to escape the extreme poverty of her neighborhood. Despite being beautiful and having the support and love she receives from her parents, she lives resentful of the miserable life that left her without her younger sister Rosa, who died. She aims to escape poverty using her looks while expecting her lover Mariano, a striving doctor, to fulfill her dreams.
While studying at a luxurious school on a scholarship, Teresa meets Paulo, a wealthy and popular student. She leaves Mariano for Paulo, aiming to escape poverty. She dates him throughout high school, and then she urges marriage, but Paulo leaves upon learning about her lack of funds. He offers a kept relationship, which she declines. Paulo's mother, Genoveva, strongly objects.
Aida, jealous and enamored with Paulo, publicly shames Teresa by displaying her poverty and lies in front of her classmates. Vowing strength, Teresa befriends teacher Arturo, who supports her law education. "Entre ser y no ser, yo soy" ("Between being or not being, I am") becomes her motto. She plans revenge on Aida and Paulo. Teresa befriends Arturo, aiming to make him love her. Jealous of her friend Aurora's love for Mariano, she reconciles with him. Arturo's sister, Luisa, warms up to Teresa's kindness.
Arturo unintentionally falls for Teresa. Luisa urges his confession. Teresa dates Mariano, then gets engaged, but leaves him for Arturo due to impatience. Mariano, devastated, finds comfort in Aida after Paulo's death via drug overdose. Mariano's pleas fail. Arturo and Teresa's trip to Cancun reveals her true self. They marry despite Arturo's jealousy of Mariano. Arturo's affair with ex-fiancée Paloma, Teresa's past infidelity with Mariano, and Paloma's death put a strain on their marriage. Teresa contemplates divorce, until Arturo surprises her with a belated European honeymoon. Over time, despite initial thoughts of Mariano, Teresa falls in love with Arturo.
Time passes, and Arturo learns of Teresa's prior intimacy with Mariano before their wedding and her motive for marrying for money. Arturo then faces a financial crisis, testing their marriage by moving to Teresa's old neighborhood. She pursues Fernando, Luisa's multimillionaire fiancé and Arturo's best friend, for his status, a plan discovered by Mariano who tells Luisa. Luisa breaks off with Mariano, learns she is pregnant by Fernando, and Teresa's father, Armando dies in disappointment. Teresa loves Arturo, wanting his recovery. Lucia, who is Luisa's best friend, is in love with Arturo, evoking Teresa's jealousy.
As the plot unfolds, Teresa successfully lures Fernando, persuading him to leave Luisa and share his fortune. During a wedding interview, she disowns her family, revealing her background. Juana and Refugio, heartbroken, see her true nature. Teresa justifies her actions as an interview strategy. Friends and family criticize her for choosing money over love. Teresa changes her attitude and decides to change to be a better person. She abandons Fernando, pursues Arturo's forgiveness, and cares for him after a car accident. Arturo heals, but rejects her. Teresa donates Fernando's money to Paloma's child foundation after his refusal. Refugio and Juana deny forgiveness. Alone, Teresa reflects, hugging a teddy bear from Arturo. Afterwards, Arturo arrives to embrace and kiss her.
First Alternative Ending: ↵There is an alternative ending that was broadcast during the popular Mexican show Hoy. This ending featured a heartbroken Teresa, finally realizing and accepting that she is now alone and none of her loved ones want anything to do with her, leaving Arturo's house to begin a new life. Six months later, she is working at a company as an assistant, where she is approached by her new boss, asking her to meet him at his office. As she makes her way, Teresa unbuttons her blouse before breaking the fourth wall by smiling seductively to the camera and saying her famous phrase, implying that she is back to her old manipulative ways.
Second Alternative Ending: ↵In this ending, Teresa goes back to her house realizing that no one loves her, goes to her room, and hugs the bear that Arturo gave her as a gift. Fernando suddenly appears and sees Teresa crying. Angry because Teresa ruined his life, he draws a gun and shoots her. She lies on the ground holding her bear and dies.
