The Order premiered in competition at the 81st Venice International Film Festival in August 2024. It is scheduled to be released theatrically in the United States on December 6, 2024.[3]
In 1983, an Idaho-based FBI agent spots a pattern in recent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations and armored car heists terrorizing communities across the Pacific Northwest. He sets out to prove it is not the work of a traditional organized crime unit, but a radical group with a charismatic leader Bob Mathews.[4]
The Order had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2024, where it competed for the Golden Lion.[10]Amazon Prime Video will distribute in multiple international territories excluding the United States.[11] In May 2024, Vertical acquired U.S. distribution rights to the film, and will release it on December 6, 2024, in a limited theatrical release.[4][3]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 88% of 34 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.60/10.[12]Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 72 out of 100, based on 17 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[13]
Tim Grierson of Screen International wrote that the film was "always skillfully choreographed but never showy".[14] Stephanie Bunbury of Deadline Hollywood characterized the film as a "sweeping slice of political Americana".[5] Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter described the film as "a gripping true story of American violence".[15]
