Tutu Park Mall is a mall located in Anna's Retreat in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.[1]

The mall opened on June 3, 1993.[1] It was the first mall on Saint Thomas.[2] It is a regional landmark, known locally as "The Mall".[1] Tutu Park Mall not only includes the mall building itself but the surrounded area.[2] It contains over 60 stores.[1] Kmart and The Market serve as anchor stores.[2] Additionally, there is also a food court.[3] Numerous fast food businesses can be found in the area.[4] It also serves as a central gathering point for the local community.[1] Parking is also available.[3] It is located along U.S. Virgin Islands Highway 38.[3] It is centrally located on the island.[2]

Because of its location, it serves as a local transportation hub.[5]

History

[edit]

William Mahaffey and John Foster were the principal partners to start the mall.[2] With other investors, they leased the property from the Hartland family.[2] Prior to construction, the site of the mall was the site of an archaeological excavation.[6] In September 1992, construction started and it was opened a year later.[2]

Timeline

[edit]

On February 18, 1999, OfficeMax opened its doors adjacent to Tutu Park Mall.[7]

On February 12, 2007, IHOP opened its first franchise owned by Allison Petrus on St. Thomas.[8]

In September 2017, generator issues after Hurricane Maria prompted the mall to close for three weeks.[9]

In June 2018, Tutu Park celebrated 25 years of serving the St. Thomas community.[10] Kmart reopens after being destroyed by Hurricane Irma.[11]
