History

[edit]

The College of Music began as the Conservatory of Music, established on September 4, 1916. The conservatory first operated in a rented building in Quiapo, Manila and among the first enrollees were the children of prominent figures in Manila.

The first director of the conservatory was George Wallace, a voice professor from the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 1924, the conservatory would move to Ermita, and to Villamor Hall in 1933.

The conservatory moved to its present location at the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1948.

The conservatory building was finished in 1963 using funding from the United States Agency for International Development.

In 1968, the conservatory would be elevated into the College of Music under the administration of UP President, Carlos P. Romulo.[2]
