WIIZ (97.9 FM) is a commercial radio station broadcasting a Mainstream Urban format. Licensed to Blackville, South Carolina, the station serves the Barnwell and Augusta, Georgia, area. It owned by Nicwild Communications, Inc.[2] Its studios are on Marlboro Avenue in Barnwell.
WIIZ is a Class C2 station. It has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 50,000 watts. The transmitter is in Kline, South Carolina.
Since 1997, the radio station has aired "The Ol' Skool Ride" on weekdays from 5:25 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Artists heard are from the last 25 years. The Wiz carries the nationally syndicated Russ Parr Show in morning drive time.
Yo' Girl D.L. (Dark 'n' Lovely) was the station's first Operations Manager/Music Director, as well being an on-air personality under her nickname "Miss Primetime In The Nightime". Other DJs included Fredd E. Redd, Bobby Nichols, Suga In The Morning, Tutu The Bad Boy, Corey Hill, with K.D.O., & Rob Black.
WIZF 101.1 in Cincinnati also goes by the name "The Wiz" and also carries The Russ Parr Morning Show but has a different ownership.
The station signed on the air on April 16, 1993 . The original call sign was WAAN.
In October, 1995, the station switched its call letters to the current WIIZ-FM. Despite having the new call sign, the station waited until April 1, 1996, to debut its WIZ format. The first two personalities were Bobby Nichols and Yo' Girl D.L.(Priscilla Annette Gray).[3]
