Magallanes Renovables is a Spanish renewable energy company founded in 2009, dedicated to generating tidal energy.

They use as much technology as there is available from the wind and naval industries to minimize the technology risk.

Achievements[editar]

  • 2013: Constructing and validating a 1:10 Scale Prototype

The tests were carried out in Vigo and later at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in the Orkney Islands.

  • 2017: Full Scale Platform

They built a full scale platform, the ATIR, 45m long and 15m deep, with a total installed capacity of 2MW that is software limited to 1,5MW.

  • 2019: Energy Generation

This time, with their full scale platform ready to generate tidal energy into the Scottish energy grid. The ATIR was connected and generated energy from tidal currents, validating the whole system.

  • 2020: Big Maintenance demonstration

Every floating device on the ocean needs a big maintenance after 7 to 10 years of operation. They validated the possibility to carry out this operation in the summer of 2020 despite the Covid emergency. The operation was carried out in Edinburgh in less than a month.

  • 2021: Test and Operation

Currently the ATIR platform is back in Fall of Warnes, to continue to generate energy.

  • 2022: First European tidal energy park

Magallanes Renovables is assigned a fixed tariff in the UK auction, which will allow four platforms to be trading energy from tidal currents by 2026.

  • 2023: Two new contracts in the UK

Magallanes Renovables will be able to generate 4.5 megawatts using the waves on the coasts of Scotland and Wales.
