Aaron Tanner is an American graphic designer, author, and musician whose work primarily centers around the visual histories of alternative rock bands.[1]
Tanner started Melodic Virtue, originally a graphic design firm, in 2004. He has over fifteen years of experience designing album covers and other merchandise for the American alternative rock band Ween.[2] He has also created design work for the Pixies (band), Explosions in the Sky, and Lil Bub.[3]
In January 2017, Tanner changed the focus of Melodic Virtue to become an independent publishing house dedicated to preserving the legacies of underground bands through limited-run coffee table books.[4] His publications feature rare photographs and artwork from artists like The Residents, Butthole Surfers, Face to Face (punk band), Lil Bub, and Ministry (band).[5] Tanner's work is featured in permanent collections at institutions like the Smithsonian and The Museum of Modern Art. Until 2024, Tanner has released 9 books.[6] His book Butthole Surfers: What Does Regret Mean? was named LA Weekly’s Book of the Month in 2019.[7][8]
Tanner formed Stationary Odyssey with Brett Siler in 2002. The group produced 3 full-length albums, 5 EPs, and 2 singles before disbanding in 2012. Their last release was a split 7" single with Joey Santiago and David Lovering of the Pixies (band)|Pixies.[9] Since then, Tanner has founded the noise rock group Off-Ox[10] and a recording project with Rob Crow (Pinback) and Spencer Seim (Hella (band)) called Byre.[11]
