    Sam Alexander Caldwell (born 1986), known professionally as Alexander Star, is an American songwriter, recording artist, performer, and social impact activist. Star is known for the songs "This Is My Era", "Pass The Good Vibes Around", "Show Me The Way", and his appearances on the French reality TV series Les Anges (TV series).

    Career[edit]

    Star released the song "This Is My Era" to correspond to the movement of the same name, #ThisIsMyEra, at the Millennium Campus Conference held at Lynn University in 2014.[1]

    "This Is My Era" features Liberian-American artist Dawyen Sekajipo and was filmed as a music video created in conjunction with Sam Vaghar's Millennium Campus Network and UNICEF. In 2015, Star performed the song inside the United Nations Headquarters alongside actor Terry Crews at the 7th annual Millennium Campus Conference.[2]

    Star made his primetime television debut in 2017 on the ninth season of the French reality TV series Les Anges.[3] Star appeared in seven episodes leading French stars Kim Glow, Barbara Lune, and Mila Jasmine in performance training, songwriting, and recording a French-language version of his pop song "Pass The Good Vibes Around".[4] The song reached #60 on the iTunes France charts[5], and Star performed it live in Paris on Le Mad Mag alongside French singer Alban Bartoli. Star appeared again two seasons later on the 11th season of Les Anges writing the song "Kisses For You" for French reality star Beverly Bello and coaching her through singing and recording the song.

    In 2018, Star collaborated with MSC Cruises who used "Pass The Good Vibes Around" for a destination marketing campaign supporting the islands of St. Maarten and Puerto Rico following Hurricane Irma.[6] MSC and Star accompanied the song with a music video on location in the islands.[7]

    In July 2018, Star traveled to Rwanda, East Africa, to perform at the 4th annual Ubumuntu Arts Festival in Kigali[8] where he collaborated with Rwandan singer Andy Bumuntu to create the festival's new anthem "Show Me The Way".[9] Working with A Partner In Education, a UK-based nonprofit, Star and Bumuntu visited Umubano Academy in Kigali and brought some of the students on stage during their performance at the festival.[10] Star returned to Kigali in 2019 to headline the Ubumuntu Arts Festival again.[11]

    Star’s songwriting work includes co-writing "Go" on Black Violin's Classically Trained album, and writing and performing the chorus on Jay Burna's 2018 single "Mine All Mine" featuring Star and Khalil (singer).[12][13]

    Philanthropy[edit]

    In 2016, Star created a song for the city of Miami, Florida, for their Keep Miami Beautiful PSA campaign.[14] In 2017, the PSA was nominated for a Suncoast Chapter|Suncoast Regional Emmy Award but did not win.[15] The city honored Star with a Proclamation for his contribution.[16]

    From 2018 through 2020, Montessori Model United Nations in the United States(MMUN) featured Star as a speaker, performer, and songwriting coach at conferences held in New York City, Chicago, and Rome. Following mandatory lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Star continued working with MMUN virtually, leading international songwriting and recording collaborations via Zoom.[17] In 2019, the Montessori Model United Nations organization created a teaching scholarship in Star's name to honor his contributions in songwriting and global activism.[18]

    In January 2020, Star collaborated with the MSC Foundation and Super Bowl LIV Host Committee to remix "This Is My Era"[19] for the coral reef awareness campaign Super Coral Play.[20] Star performed with NFL players Larry Fitzgerald, Jarvis Landry, and Mark Sanchez on MSC's Ocean Cay private island marine reserve.[21][22]

    Star has also worked with nonprofits like The Motivational Edge and HANDY, Inc. to lead therapeutic songwriting and recording collaborations with teens in foster care.[23][24]

    Personal life[edit]

    Star lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with his wife, Samantha, and son, Zion.[23][25]
