American Jews, sometimes known simply as Jewish Americans, are citizens of the United States of America who identify as Jewish in some way, whether it by religion, ethnicity, culture, or nationality. Ashkenazi Jews, who are descended from diaspora Jewish communities of Central and Eastern Europe and account for around 90–95% of the American Jewish population, make up the majority of today's Jewish community in the United States.
Although their descendants make up a minority in the United States today, Sephardic Jews, along with other more recent Sephardi Jews, Mizrahi Jews, Beta Israel-Ethiopian Jews, and various other ethnically Jewish communities, as well as a smaller number of Ashkenazi Jews, represent the remainder of the American Jewish population. Prior to the mass immigration of Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardic Jews who arrived in America via Portugal made up the majority of the country's then-small Jewish population The Jewish community in the United States of America embodies a diverse selection of Jewish cultural practises, which span the whole gamut of Jewish religious observance.
The Jewish population of the United States of America is either the greatest or the second largest in the world, after that of Israel, depending on the religious definitions used and the demographic numbers. It is projected that there will be 7.6 million Jews living in the United States by the year 2020. This figure represents 2.4% of the entire population of the country. This comprises 1.6 million Jewish children as well as 4.9 million people who identify their faith as being Jewish, 1.2 million Jewish adults who identify with no religion, and 4.9 million individuals who do not identify with any religion. It is estimated that up to 15,000,000 Americans are part of the "enlarged" American Jewish population, which accounts for 4.5% of the total population of the United States. This population consists of people who have at least one Jewish grandparent and who, according to the Law of Return, would be eligible for Israeli citizenship if they were to immigrate there.
