American Reality Television Awards, also known as The ARTAS, is a set of awards presented annually. It was created by Kristen Moss and Andrew Ward and is presented by the Academy of Reality Television.[1] Instituted in 2013, ARTAS is the first awards show to recognize talent on screen and behind the scenes of Reality Television.[2][3]
The latest ARTAS was held in the Summer of 2021, receiving over 2 million votes in all categories.[4]
The ARTAS was created by Executive Producers Kristen Moss[5] and Andrew Ward with the aim to support, examine, and redefine the art of reality in media by rewarding excellence, encouraging experimentation, and recognizing that the public is the center of the entertainment industry.[6]
The first awards were presented in 2013 rewarding excellence in front and behind the cameras in all areas in the world of unscripted television. Since then, the awards have been held to honor and promote the wide diversity of programming that has propelled reality television to the forefront of entertainment.[7]
The American Reality Television Awards also started a Humanitarian Award in 2014, which eventually evolved into the Reality Television Hall of Fame.[8] Some noteworthy recipients of this award include former President Donald Trump, Heidi and Spencer Pratt, and Janice Dickinson.[9]
From all 8 ARTAS Awards, Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Harvey, Leah Remini, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Gordon Ramsay, Abby Lee Miller, and RuPaul are some of the prominent figures who won the trophy across different categories.[10] Past American Reality Television Awards hosts have been Matt Iseman of American Ninja Warrior, Jonathan Bennett of Cake Wars, Michelle Visage of RuPaul’s Drag Race, Melissa Peterman of Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition and Kel Mitchell of Nickelodeon and Dancing with the Stars.[11]
