Aston University is a public research institution that may be found in the heart of Birmingham, England, in the United Kingdom. The university's abbreviation for post-nominals is Aston. Aston University was founded in 1895 as the Birmingham Municipal Technical School, and it became the first College of Advanced Technology in the United Kingdom in 1956. On April 22, 1966, Queen Elizabeth II presented Aston University with its royal charter. Aston University was founded in 1826.

More than seventy-three percent of students at Aston University participate in an internship or work placement during their time at the university, making it the institution with the highest placement participation rate in the United Kingdom.

It was revealed in September 2021 that Aston University has been placed on the shortlist for the title of University of the Year in the Times Higher Education Awards 2021.

The Guardian newspaper bestowed its "Buildings That Inspire" award to the Aston Students' Union in the year 2020. This honour came shortly after the journal named Aston University "University of the Year." Aston University was honoured with the title of "Outstanding Entrepreneurial University" at the Times Higher Education Awards in the year 2020.

The institution made public in 2021 its intention to discontinue the study of history, languages, and translation in favour of putting more of its academic emphasis on engineering, business, and health care. Protests were lodged against this decision by individuals affiliated with the institution as well as humanities academics in general.
