An audio engineer (also known as a sound engineer or a recording engineer) is a professional who assists in the production of a recording or a live performance by balancing and adjusting sound sources using equalisation, dynamics processing, and audio effects, as well as mixing, reproducing, and enhancing sound. Additionally, audio engineers set up, sound check, and perform live sound mixing for music concerts, theatre performances, sporting events and corporate functions utilising a mixing console and a sound reinforcement system.

Alternately, an audio engineer can refer to a scientist or professional engineer who holds an engineering degree and works in the fields of acoustical engineering, electronic/electrical engineering, or (musical) signal processing and is responsible for the design, development, and construction of audio or musical technology.
