Early Life and Education Dr. B S Srinath (fondly known as Dr. BSS) was born on 24th January 1950, in Bhadracolony (Bhadravati) of Shivamogga District, Karnataka He lost his mother at a young age and spent his childhood with his father, who he describes as his ultimate role model. [1] [2]. He completed his high school education in Paper Town High School in Bhadravati, Pre University Education in Silver Jubilee College, Bhadravati and completed his MBBS from JJM Medical College in Davanagere, during which he secured 2 Gold Medals. [2] [3] He completed his General Surgery training and obtained his MS Degree from PGI Chandigarh [3] . He received the ORS Award (1982) from The Department of Education, Her Majesty’s Government of UK for Research in Immunity, Cancer, and Nutrition and cleared the FRCS exams from both Edinburgh and Glasgow in 1981. Professional Career Upon returning from the UK in 1983, he worked as an Associate Professor in the Departments of Surgery at Kidwai Institute of Oncology and MS Ramaiah Medical College [2] [3]. He later served as the Managing Director of Bangalore Institute of Oncology for several years.[3]
In 2008, he established Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation and now serves as the Managing Trustee of the foundation. The foundation has established Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, where he is a Senior Consultant Surgical Oncologist and Head of the Institution. [1] The comprehensive cancer hospital has been fulfilling Dr. B S Srinath’s vision of providing high quality cancer care at affordable costs to all cancer patients. [4] Under his leadership, the foundation has also established Sri Shankara National Centre for Cancer Prevention and Research, which was inaugurated by the then President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. [5] Recently, well-known entrepreneur and philanthropist couple Subroto Bagchi and Susmita Bagchi have made a generous donation and partnered with Sri Shankara Cancer Foundation to establish a cancer hospital in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, under the guidance and leadership of Dr. B S Srinath along with the support of Government of Odisha [6]
Service to Cancer Dr. B S Srinath is a practicing surgical oncologist and spends most part of his day either attending to or operating on cancer patients from 8:00 am onwards[4]. He has delivered several lectures on the relationship between lifestyle and cancer as well as the many challenges faced by cancer patients in India and has worked extensively towards preventing cancer by conducting many awareness, prevention and screening camps across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. He has published several scientific articles on cancer in national and international peer – reviewed journals as a co-author. This includes work on cancer biology, psychological effects on cancer patients and the role of yoga in support of cancer patients.[8]
