Benaiah Poindexter (born 12 July 1983) is an African American entrepreneur, permanent-makeup specialist, and influencer.[1] She is the founder of Scalp Prodigy, which has three locations in Los Gatos, CA, Silver Spring, MD, and Las Vegas, CA.[2] Scalp Prodigy specializes in Soft Scalp Micropigmentation (hyperrealistic work).[3]
Born in San Jose, California, Poindexter is also a master closer and debt eliminator with a proven track record of accurately analyzing contracts, conducting research, reporting, information management, marketing, and business-development initiatives while staying within budget constraints.[4]
Poindexter is the recipient of the 2019 Best SMP Artist Award and has been featured in a number of media outlets for her entrepreneurial strides such as NY Weekly, Yahoo, CW Las Vegas, Marketwatch, and others.[5]
Poindexter was born on 12 July 1983 in San Jose, California to Nelda Grimes and Herschel Grimes. She grew up with one half sister and two brothers—Krystle, Herschel, and Jonathan.[6]
Poindexter’s grandfather, Walter Green, was a major influence on her growing up. Green was one of four African American engineers who worked on the top secret TAURUS rocket launch program before becoming wealthy in multi-family real estate. He was one of Poindexter’s main inspirations for starting a successful business.
Poindexter, after completing her high school education at Mt. Pleasant High school, enrolled in Prince George's Community College, and later transferred to Bowie State University to complete her undergraduate degree in Business Administration and minor in Procurement. In 2012, Poindexter completed her master’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Maryland University College. Later in 2017, she also obtained her Aesthetics license at the Academy of Hair Design and Body Art license in Nevada.[7]
Poindexter started her career in 2008 as a Program Support Specialist for the U.S. Department of Education, where she worked for four months as an intern before accepting a position as a Junior Contract Specialist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture before focusing on completing college.
In 2009, Poindexter joined a private company where she worked for half a year in the visa customer service department, before beginning her work as a contractor for government agencies as a Junior Contract Specialist. In 2012, Poindexter became a Senior Contract Specialist and Quality Assurance Reviewer. Poindexter stepped away from contracting work in 2015 to join a large private company as a Senior Program Manager.
Poindexter got married and moved across the country to start her entrepreneurial journey in 2016 with the establishment of Scalp Prodigy, a premier cosmetic tattoo establishment that specializes in Scalp Micropigmentation and Microblading, before extending her reach into salon suites and real estate.[8]
Poindexter married Aaron Poindexter in 2016. She currently lives in Las Vegas with her husband, two dogs, and immediate family. Poindexter, in her free time likes to draw, dance, and focus on leading the next generation of business owners within her niche into debt free lifestyles.
