Gugulethu Berita Khumalo (born June 27, 1991) is a Zimbabwean-born singer.Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Gugulethu relocated to East London,Eastern Cape in 2011 to study Financial Information Systems at Walter Sisulu University.[2]
In March 2013, She released her debut album titled Conquering Spirit which peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes and earned her Gold Status on Recording Industry of South Africa|RISA.[3] In the same year She won Best African Pop Album at Metro Fm Awards.[4][5]
Her first single on Song Empowerment album titled "Sukundixhesha" has plugged on various radio stations airplay after 1 week released,in 2014.[6][7]
Her single titled "Thandolwethu" single has reached over 300,000 YouTube views. "Ezizweni" single on her third album peaked No. 1 on Metro FM’s Top 40 chart.[8] And her debut single titled "Ndicel'ikiss" peaked number 21 on the radio monitor RAMS charts,recorded under her independent label ASSALI Music. She collaborated with Mobi Dixon on her single "Ezizweni" and "Da Capo on Found You".[9]
Gugulethu Khumalo was born on June 27, 1991 in Bulawayo,Zimbabwe [10], in a family of four children and she is the firstborn.[11]
Her parents were both school teachers and she spent many years in Bulawayo and Zhombe with her parents who worked in Rio Tinto.[12] She attended Nketa Primary school and Greenfield Primary Schools in Zhombe.[13]
In early 2012, Her family later migrated to New Zealand and later moved her to South Africa to pursue her tertiary education at Walter Sisulu University located in the Eastern Cape.
After she came back to South Africa to enroll her studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University|NMU in Bachelor of Commerce degree and graduated,on other side she started doing started her musical career while she was at school.
At her earlier age she participated in the choir at their local church in Zhombe and after she learned how to play the piano, her love for music was born.
She wrote a few songs and bought a guitar for herself at the age of 18. Her parents were against promptly devotion of music and decided to sent her back to their homeland in Zimbabwe to study.
In 2013, She released her first debut album Conquering Spirit, which earned Gold status with sales of 15,000 copies and peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes few weeks after release.
