The Bilaspur district is a part of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The district's main office is in the city of Bilaspur. As of 2011, it had the second most people of any of Chhattisgarh's 27 districts, after Raipur.
The name of the district comes from the city of Bilaspur, which is where the district's government is based. A legend says that Bilasa Devi, a fisherwoman, founded this city. This is where the name "Bilaspur" comes from.
Bilas Deo, who was the Maharaja of Bandhavgarh, set up Bilaspur. The Bhonsla Rajas of Nagpur ruled the area that is now Bilaspur District until 1818. At that time, a Maratha Subah was in charge of the area (district officer). In 1818, the British began running the area on behalf of Raghuji III, who was too young to do so himself. A commissioner was in charge of the area. After Raghuji III died in 1853, the British added the Nagpur Kingdom as the Nagpur Province to British India. In 1861, when the new Central Provinces were created, Bilaspur was made into a separate district. In October 1903, a new province called "The Central Provinces and Berar" was made, and Bilaspur District became part of that province's Chhattisgarh Division. When the Sambalpur District was moved to Bengal Province in October 1905, the Chandrapur-Padampur and Malkhurda estates were moved to Bilaspur District. When the Drug district (now called the Durg District) was made in 1906, a part of the Mungeli Tahsil was moved to it. Also, another part of the district was moved to the Raipur District. On May 25, 1998, the original Bilaspur District was divided into the current Bilaspur, Korba, and Janjgir-Champa districts.
In 2012, young people in the city got together on social networking sites to form a group called "Concern 4 Bilaspur." They wanted to bring everyone's attention to the bad state of the city's roads and other services and find ways to fix them.
South Eastern Coalfields, which is owned by Coal India, has its main office in Bilaspur. It is the biggest and most profitable subsidiary of Coal India.
The district of Bilaspur is also home to the most cement factories in the state. These factories are owned by companies like Lafarge, Century, ACC, and others. The ministry of Indian railways has named the Bilaspur railway zone the most profitable for the fifth year in a row. The district is also well connected by rail and road to the rest of the country, which is good for the city's economy. Vyapar Vihar, Telipara, Link Road, Sepath Road, Bus Stand Road, Rajiv Plaza, and Goal Bazar are the most important places for business in the city. Chief Engineer is in charge of this organisation (BR). The Chief Engineer (BR) is in charge of making sure that all LT and HT consumers in Bilaspur, Korba, Janjgir-Champa, and Raigarh have electricity. After the Regional Headquarters of CSEB in Raipur, Bilaspur is the second largest area in Chhattisgarh State where electricity is supplied.
