Burundi is officially the Republic of Burundi and is the capital of that country. It is a landlocked nation located in the Great Rift Valley, at the confluence of the African Great Lakes area and East Africa. Its northern and eastern borders are shared with Rwanda, while its eastern and southeast borders are shared with Tanzania, and its western boundary is shared with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its southwestern border shares a border with Lake Tanganyika. Gitega and Bujumbura, which is also the country's capital and biggest city, are the country's two capital cities.

There have been at least 500 years of continuous human existence in Burundi among the Twa, the Hutu, and the Tutsi populations. Before Germany invaded and controlled the area at the beginning of the twentieth century, Burundi had existed as an autonomous kingdom for more than 200 years. The area was surrendered to Belgium after the First World War and Germany's defeat. Ruanda-Urundi was a European colony controlled by both Germans and Belgians that included Burundi and Rwanda. Until the European conquest of Africa, Burundi and Rwanda had never been united under a single ruler.
