Norwalk, California is home to the Cerritos College, which is a public community college. It provides academic training leading to degrees and certifications in 87 distinct fields of study in nine distinct divisions.
The university was established in 1955. It got its name from Rancho Los Cerritos, which was a ranch in the area back in the 19th century. The institution, in turn, served as a source of motivation for the rebranding of the adjacent city of Dairy Valley as Cerritos. The communities of Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Norwalk, La Mirada, and Hawaiian Gardens are included in this district.
In the beginning, in September of 1956, classes were leased out of the now-closed Excelsior High School. The lawsuit brought against Dairy Valley, which is now known as Cerritos, and won by the Cerritos Junior College District on July 24, 1957 allowed for the undeveloped property to be used as an educational facility. In September of 1959, the college relocated from its previous location at Excelsior High School to its present location.
Ralph Burnight, a native of Redlands and a resident of Bellflower as well as the superintendent of schools in the Excelsior School District, is credited with establishing the organisation. Dr. Jose Fierro is now serving as the president of the institution.
A new building for mathematics and computer information sciences as well as a complex devoted to the fine arts were both introduced to the campus on February 15, 2017. The combined price of the brand new facilities was approximately $55 million, and they were paid for using money through a bond initiative called Measure G.
The Cerritos Community College became the first community college in California on June 11, 2020, to provide accommodation for students who did not have a place to live or who had housing that was questionable.
