Cornell University is a private Ivy League and statutory land-grant research university situated in Ithaca, New York. It is a member of the National Research Council. It was founded in 1865 by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White, and it has continually been recognised among the world's best colleges by major educational journals since then.

Cornell University was established with the goal of teaching and making contributions in all areas of knowledge — from the classics to the sciences, and from the theoretical to the practical — when it was established. Cornell's foundation concept, a classic 1868 remark from founder Ezra Cornell, captures these ideas, which were considered radical at the time: "I would create an institution where every individual may get instruction in any subject."

Located on the university's main Ithaca campus, the institution is divided into seven undergraduate colleges and seven graduate divisions, with each college and division establishing its own admissions requirements and academic programmes in a somewhat autonomous manner. Besides its main campus in New York City, the institution also maintains two satellite campuses in Education City, Qatar.

Cornell University is one of just a few private land grant institutions in the United States that is also a research university. Three of the university's undergraduate colleges are state-supported statutory or contract colleges through the State University of New York (SUNY) system, including the agricultural and human ecology colleges, as well as the industrial labour relations school. The other two undergraduate colleges are privately funded. Only the Cornell Veterinary College receives state funding among the university's graduate programmes. Cornell University, as a land grant institution, maintains a cooperative extension outreach programme in every county in the state of New York and gets yearly money from the state of New York to support specific educational purposes. The Cornell University Ithaca Campus is 745 acres in size, but when the Cornell Botanic Gardens (more than 4,300 acres) and the various university-owned property in New York City are taken into consideration, the campus becomes much bigger.
