In the entertainment industry, a costume designer is someone who creates the costumes for a film, stage performance, or television programme. The costume designer's job is to construct the characters clothing and costumes, as well as to balance the scenes with texture, colour, and other elements. The costume designer works with the director, scenic designer, set designer, sound designer, and other members of the creative team. The costume designer may also work in collaboration with other artists such as a hair stylist, wig master, and makeup artist. In European theatre, the function of the theatrical designer is distinct, since the designer is often responsible for both costume and scenic components.

When it comes to visual design, designers often aim to accentuate a character's individuality as well as to create an unfolding storyline of colour, changing social standing, or time via the visual design of clothing and accessories. Depending on the director's concept, they may distort or enhance the body in various ways. The designer must make certain that the designs let the actor to move as required by the job. The actor is responsible for carrying out the director's blocking of the production without causing damage to the costumes. Wearable and washable garments are essential, particularly for productions with long runs or films with near real-time pacing (which means that most costumes will not change between scenes), yet whose primary shooting phase may last several weeks or more. It is necessary for the designer to consult with the director, as well as with the set and lighting designers, in order to ensure that all parts of the overall production design are cohesive. It is necessary for the designer to have excellent creative ability as well as extensive understanding of pattern creation, draping, drawing, fabrics, and the history of fashion. The designer must have a thorough understanding of historical costuming, as well as the movement style and poise that may be required by period attire.
