Dr. Freya Schnabel is an American medical oncologist. She is the director of breast surgery at NYU Langone's Perlmutter Cancer Center and a professor at the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.[1] She is an expert at treating breast cancer and benign breast diseases. Dr. Schnabel is best known for her efforts in early breast cancer detection and prevention, as well as for using MarginProbe to identify additional cancer cells on the margins of removed tumors.[2]
Dr. Schnabel was born and raised in Astoria, Queens. Her parents were immigrants and Holocaust survivors, instilling in her a strong work ethic and a commitment to excellence. Dr. Schnabel attended Stuyvesant High School before earning her undergraduate degree from Barnard College. She obtained her medical degree from the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine in 1982. Dr. Schnabel completed her residency in general surgery at NYU and pursued a fellowship in surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, specializing in breast surgery.
Dr. Schnabel began her career in breast surgery at Columbia Presbyterian in the early 1990s.[3]
In 2007, Dr. Schnabel joined NYU Langone as the director of breast surgery at Perlmutter Cancer Center and a professor at the Department of Surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Dr. Schnabel is a medical oncologist treating patients with breast cancer.[4]
Dr. Schnabel is skilled in addressing benign breast diseases, with a focus on individuals at high risk of developing breast cancer due to personal or family history, including those with a genetic predisposition. Additionally, Dr. Schnabel led the development of the Scout device, a wireless technology that utilizes radar technology to locate nonpalpable breast abnormalities during surgery, further enhancing surgical precision.[7][8]
