Dubai

Located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai is the most populous city and serves as the administrative centre for the Emirate of Dubai. It began as a tiny fishing town in the 18th century and has grown quickly into a cosmopolitan metropolis with an emphasis on tourism and hospitality since its founding in the early 21st century. A famous tourist destination, Dubai has the second highest concentration of five-star hotels in the world and the world's tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa, making it one of the most visited cities in the world.

Aiming to become the commercial centre for Western Asia, Dubai is located in the eastern portion of the Arabian Peninsula, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. A significant worldwide transit hub for both people and freight, it is also a major international business centre. It was the oil money that enabled the city, which was already a significant commercial centre, to grow at a rapid pace. Since the early twentieth century, Dubai has served as a regional and international commercial hub, and its economy is based on income from trade, tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services, among other activities. As a percentage of GDP in 2018, oil production contributed less than 1% to the emirate. Government data estimates that the population of Dubai will be about 3,400,800 as of September 8, 2020, based on current estimates from government agencies.
