ENMA is a Dutch rock band from Tilburg. Formed in 2020, the group's line-up includes vocalist Alex Schenkels, guitarists Tom Adams and Wessel Speelman, drummer Yuma van Eekelen and bassist Yoeri van Helvoirt. To date, the band has one studio album, three singles and 2 videoclips. They combine both grunge and prog rock, yet still having layers of metal in the music[1].
In 2016 songwriter and guitarist Tom Adams and vocalist Martijn van der Velden started a new progressive project called "The Fields" in which they combine melancholic melodies with progressieve elements. With the help of Tom's old bandmates from The New Dominion, Yuma van Eekelen on drums and Michiel Oskam on solo guitar duties, they released their first three songs in January 2017 on the EP “Conspiring Truth”[2][3]. Soon after however, Martijn decided to leave the band because of other priorities. During this time Tom kept writing more progressive metal oriented tunes influenced by bands like Katatonia, Opeth, Alice in Chains and Tool.
In 2018 Alex Schenkels joined as the new vocalist for his project. His sociocritical lyrics[4] and style of singing boosted the songwriting into a more heavy grunge sound. Bassplayer, Yoeri van Helvoirt, joined a year later and in 2020 Wessel Speelman also joined the band as the solo guitarist. By the end of the year and still with the help of Yuma van Eekelen on drums the band finished writing the final songs of the upcoming debut. It was then that the name ENMA was chosen as a more fitting band name.
In the spring of 2022 the band signed with Electric Spark Records to also release their debut on Vinyl[5]. Of two songs on their debut album two videoclips were made. The first clip is of the first single "Enigma"[6] [7] and portrays the enigmatic struggle for power of its main characters, against the backdrop of the late 19th and early 20th century interior of two prominent locations[8] in the band's hometown Tilburg, The Netherlands. ENMA's artistic and sociohistorical video was also funded by the Culture Department of the Tilburg Municipality.
Their singles[9] and debut album were well-received in online e-zines[10] [11] [12] and were presented for the first time in full on the release-day October 28th 2022 in the Little Devil[13] in Tilburg. In 2023 ENMA was selected for a dutch traveling festival the "Popronde"[14] and a selected talent by webzine Never Mind The Hype[15]. To help the band out with their live schedule in 2023, Roel Trommelen took over most of the drum duties.
