Edwards Signalling Company, doing business as Edwards or EST, is an American fire protection and signalling systems company.

History[edit]

Edwards was founded in 1872 in New York City by Robert Edwards in David Rousseau. Rousseau drew from the company the following year. It limited its activities to fire signaling in 1896, after previously selling burglar alarms. In 1956, they opened their current manufacturing facility in Pittsfield, Maine.[5][6][7]

Some of the company's most notable projects include the Holland Tunnel (1927), the SS President Cleveland and SS President Wilson (1948), and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (1971).[8]

Ownership[edit]

The company was acquired by General Electric in 2005. In 2010, it was acquired by United Technologies Corporation's subsidiary Carrier Global.[9] In 2020, UTC announced it would spin off Carrier, the owner both Edwards and Kidde, into a new company.[10]

Products[edit]

The Adaptatone line of Edwards fire alarms was introduced in 1981. A new photoelectric smoke detector line was launched in 1986. Today, Edwards manufactures the Genesis and G4 alarms and the EST3 panel, as well as smoke detectors.[11]The Genesis was introduced in 2004 as the successor to the Adaptatone line [12]; it received an update in 2015.[13] The Integrity was first made in the 2000s.[14] The G4 was introduced as the successor of the Genesis in 2020.[15]

Controversies[edit]

In 2020, Edwards recalled some of their smoke detector models due to their failure to alert a fire.[16]
