Ensemble Paramirabo is a contemporary music ensemble^[1] founded in Montreal in 2008^[2]. It specializes in the interpretation of 20th and 21st century repertoire, while devoting a large part of its activities to the creation of works by emerging composers.

History[edit]

Named in homage to Quebec composer Claude Vivier and his eponymous piece, Ensemble Paramirabo was founded in 2008 by flautist and current artistic director Jeffrey Stonehouse^[3]. With a repertoire of more than 200 works to its credit, including more than 80 premieres and commissions^[4], the ensemble has performed on numerous Canadian stages and has been invited to take part in Winnipeg's Cluster New Music Festival (2013)^[5], Montreal Contemporary Music Lab (2013)^[6] and Waterloo Region Contemporary Music Sessions (2018)^[7]. The ensemble has also performed in Belgium, England, Mexico and the United States as part of the LOOP (2019)^[8] and Ars Musica (2019), Frontiers Festival (2016)^[9], Eduardo Mata Festival (2016)^[10] and New York’s Mise-En Festival (2014)^[11]. In 2019, The ensemble is the winner of the OPUS Prize 22nd edition – Premiere of the Year for its collaboration with composer Gabriel Dharmoo^[12]. The following year, the ensemble won the OPUS Prize 23rd edition – Performer of the Year^[13], in addition to seeing its third album Alone & Unalone (James O'Callaghan) nominated for a Juno Award in the category Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber Ensemble^[14]. Ensemble Paramirabo's commitment to the next generation of new music composers leads it to frequently present creations by emerging composers, many of whom have been awarded composition prizes^[15]. Since its beginnings in 2008, the ensemble has notably participated in the creation of works by : Serge Garant category of the 2011 SOCAN Foundation Awards^{[citation needed]}), Scott Rubin (2nd prize : OSSIA New Music 2013-2014 Composition Prize), Julien Robert (1st prize : 2014 Sond’Ar-te electric ensemble competition and 3rd prize : Serge Garant category of the 2014 SOCAN Foundation Awards), Gabriel Dharmoo (winner of an 2019 OPUS 2019 Award)^[12] and James O'Callaghan (nominated for a Juno Award in 2020)^[14].
