The European Medical Journal (EMJ) is a privately owned, open-access^[1] online publisher specialising in medical journals spanning eighteen therapeutic areas. Each journal features medical congress highlights, abstract reviews, and peer-reviewed articles^[2]. Additionally, flagship EMJ journals are published quarterly, offering research papers, features, and interviews. Originally established as the European Medical Group (EMG)^[3] by Spencer Gore in 2012, the publisher rebranded to EMJ in 2022. Today, EMJ produces a range of digital content, including journals, podcasts, webinars, and educational materials. EMJ has been recognised by the Queen's Awards for Enterprise with an award for outstanding achievement by a UK business in International Trade.^[4]

History[edit]

The company was founded in 2012 by CEO Spencer Gore in Essex.^[5] Spencer launched the European Medical Group to capitalise on a gap in the market he discovered while working in publishing^[6]. Realising that many of the registered medical congress attendees did not make it to the event, the premise of the business was to deliver a journal from the congress in 6 weeks to offer learning to those who did not attend. EMJ transitioned to open access publishing in 2016 and launched a pharmaceutical magazine, GOLD, in 2018^[7].

The company provides medical journals across eighteen therapeutic areas: allergy & immunology; cardiology; dermatology; diabetes; gastroenterology; hematology; hepatology; innovations; interventional cardiology; microbiology & infectious diseases; nephrology; neurology; oncology; radiology; reproductive health; respiratory; rheumatology; and urology. The EMJ flagship journal is published every 3 months.

The EMJ Podcast^[8] is an educational resource designed for healthcare professionals, offering insights into clinical practice and medicine. Released weekly, it is hosted by Dr. Jonathan Sackier, an internationally renowned surgeon^[9] and Chairman of the EMJ Advisory Board. Each episode features a guest from the medical field, exploring the latest trends and innovations across different clinical specialties,

EMJ also produces EMJ GOLD^[10] . EMJ GOLD is an online content hub for medical affairs and pharmaceutical professionals. EMJ GOLD produces a podcast, titled EMJ GOLD Podcast^[11], in which they interview leaders in the industry.
